India National Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma has opened up on the pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah getting ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team, which is set to commence at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday, January 10.

The 29-year-old right-arm pacer was a late inclusion in India’s squad for the ODI series against Sri Lanka and he was set to make his comeback to top-level cricket after missing out on action since September 2022 due to a back injury.

However, on Monday, January 9, the BCCI announced that Bumrah has been ruled out of the ODI series and he “will need some more time to build bowling resilience.” Also, the BCCI stated that the “decision has been taken as a precautionary measure.”

“Team India pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Bumrah, who was set to join the team in Guwahati ahead of the ODI series, will need some more time to build bowling resilience. This decision has been taken as a precautionary measure,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in an official media release.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has not named any replacement for Jasprit Bumrah,” BCCI further stated.

At a pre-match press conference, Rohit Sharma said that Bumrah has been putting in hard yards at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to gain match fitness and just when he got back to full fitness, he felt some stiffness again, which forced them to keep him out of Sri Lanka ODIs.

“It is a very unfortunate incident with him. Poor guy has been working hard at the NCA all this time. Just when he got back to full fitness – he had started bowling and everything – it happened in the last two days. He felt a little bit of stiffness in his back. It is nothing major, just a stiffness and when Bumrah says anything, we have to be very cautious about it. That is what we did. I thought it was important for us to make the decision then to just pull him out,” said Rohit in a press conference ahead of the first ODI in Guwahati.
“When we named him, he was in the process of getting his workloads up. He was bowling in the nets. Just felt a little bit of stiffness in the back so we pulled him out. We need to be very careful with him. He had a major injury before the World Cup so we just need to be careful.”
